Our VHP Participating Authors in Operation eBook Drop Rock!

Operation eBook Drop is a program was conceived by Edward C. Patterson, novelist, for Coalition Forces on deployment.

Patterson came across a post in the Kindle forums by U.S. soldier stationed in Iraq who couldn’t download Patterson’s work because Amazon's Whispernet (the service Amazon uses to send eBooks to the Kindle devices) doesn’t work in Iraq. Patterson promptly offered his all of his books to the soldier for free via Smashwords using the coupon generator and then contacted other authors who enthusiastically agreed to participate in a similar way.

The program is not just for U.S. military personnel deployed overseas, but all coalition military personnel on deployment.

We emailed Patterson, asking how we could join the program as a publishing house and he emailed back almost immediately, explaining how our Vanilla Heart Publishing authors could get involved. We emailed our authors, explaining the program and received immediate responses that sixteen of them wanted in! Rock on, VHP authors!

After authors emailed Ed with their interest, he sent each author a list of the names and email addresses for nearly 50 military personnel serving overseas, with updates as more troops learn about the program. In just three days, our authors have sent out coupon codes for all their books and over 200 downloads of Vanilla Heart Publishing books have been completed by service personnel!

An excellent idea and it is a small gift of generosity for military personnel for their courageous and often lonely service away from friends and family.

Vanilla Heart Publishing is pleased to support our authors in  Operation E-Book Drop

Men and women of our Coalition Forces are away from home and putting themselves on the line for the rest of us. No matter what our personal political beliefs, honoring our men and women as they sacrifice their own time, safety, and energies, to say the least, for all of us, seems a small price to pay.

    What is Operation E-Book Drop?

Author Ed Patterson had an online conversation with a soldier stationed in Iraq who was having difficulty getting books to read on his Kindle - there isn't a whole lot to do for entertainment there. Ed sent the soldier a complete file of his books in Kindle format - and then the idea struck him that there might be other soldiers and other authors who would want to participate. Sure enough, lists started to form and books were being sent over the internet in various e-book formats.

Then the wonderful staff at Smashwords found out about this effort and decided to promote the program - Smashwords authors can use special coupon codes to send the members of the Coalition Forces so they can download books to their reading devices. Since Smashwords offers books in several ebook formats (including Kindle, Palm, .pdf and more), books are readable on all reading devices and even with a web browser.

    Complementary Colors
    by Kate Evans

What happens when a 31-year-old straight woman falls in love with a lesbian?

It's 1993, and Gwen Sullivan is agitated.  She's been married and divorced and is now living with her scientist boyfriend who loses himself in dark moods.  Her job at a tutoring center and her work on the Bill Clinton-for-President campaign leave her vaguely dissatisfied.  She hopes taking a night class in poetry might help.  In the poetry class, the allure of two lesbians takes her by surprise.  She can't get them out of her mind.  This prompts her to question who she is—and who she wants to be.

Soon, Gwen cannot deny her intense attraction to one of the women, Jamie.  The feeling is mutual, but Jamie, too, is in a long-term relationship—with a woman minister.  As Jamie and Gwen become more and more entwined, Gwen must ask herself who she is and what she wants from life.  She begins to see gender, sex and sexuality differently.  And as she feels compelled to “confess” her love for Jamie to her women friends, she is continually surprised by their complex reactions.  This leads her to make one of the most important decisions of her life.
